Detoxification is more than just a health buzzword; it's a vital process that keeps your body functioning optimally.

 

In fact, your body is detoxifying every moment of every day. Our bodies naturally make things like acids and unwanted products as part of our normal metabolism. The problem is, they’re not supposed to hang around inside our bodies. So we have built-in detoxification mechanisms to handle them.


But we also live in an increasingly toxic world, which means that on top of our normal metabolic waste, we now also have to deal with things like environmental pollutants, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and more. This is on top of living in an increasingly stressful world, which can also slow down our body’s natural healing mechanisms, including detoxification.


The best way to support your body’s natural detoxification processes is undoubtedly through 


  • A high-fiber, plant-based diet

  • Plenty of clean, filtered water

  • Sleep

  • Sunlight and fresh air

  • Sweat: getting enough exercise

  • Reducing stress as much as possible 


But in some cases, supplements can help. Supplementing with specific nutrients can enhance your body's detox pathways and help you feel your best. 


Below, we dive into the science behind detoxification and share the top supplements to support your body’s detox efforts.


The Process of Detoxification

Detoxification is your body's way of eliminating or neutralizing harmful substances. This process primarily occurs through metabolic pathways in the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and gastrointestinal system. These pathways break down toxins into less harmful substances that can be excreted in urine, feces, or sweat.


The liver plays a central role in detoxification. It processes and removes toxins, metabolizes hormones, and converts nutrients into forms your body can use. The liver's two detoxification phases—Phase 1 and Phase 2—work in tandem to neutralize toxins and prepare them for elimination. Ensuring the liver functions optimally is essential for effective detoxification and overall health.


Why Liver Health Is Foundational

The liver is not only a detox powerhouse but also a metabolic hub. It regulates blood sugar, processes fats and proteins, stores vitamins, and helps manage cholesterol levels. Overloading the liver through a poor diet can impair its function, leading to fatigue, weight gain, and other health issues.


A healthy diet, exercise, good hydration, sleep and stress management are key. But the right nutrients can help support normal liver function, too. 


Supplements and Nutrients that Support Liver Detoxification

The following nutrients promote the liver’s natural processes, which may help reduce the overall burden of toxicants. 


Methylated B Vitamins

I love B vitamins as a general support for metabolism, energy and mental clarity. The methylated versions can also help liver function, although it’s important not to overdo it with methylated B vitamins, as they can become overstimulating.


Role in Detoxification and Liver Function

Methylated B vitamins (usually taken as part of a B vitamin complex with methylated  vitamins B12 and folate) are essential for methylation, a biochemical process critical for cellular health, metabolism, and detoxification. Methylation helps the body process and eliminate toxins, regulate gene expression, and produce energy.


B vitamins are essential for keeping the liver healthy because they help with important processes like breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates and creating energy for the body. They also play a key role in detoxifying the liver by supporting the production of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that helps remove toxins and harmful substances. 


Vitamins like B1, B6, and folate are especially important for protecting the liver from damage caused by alcohol or other stressors.



Methylated B vitamins, such as methylfolate (B9) and methylcobalamin (B12), provide active forms of these nutrients that are readily usable by the body, enhancing liver function and detoxification. They support key processes like methylation, which is critical for detoxifying harmful substances, repairing DNA, and reducing oxidative stress


Recommended Dosage

For people who can benefit from methylated B vitamins, methylated forms like methylcobalamin (B12) and methylfolate are available. A typical dosage might include 400-800 mcg of folate and 1,000-2,000 mcg of B12 daily.


Always speak to your doctor before taking high dosages of vitamins, especially methylated vitamins; some people benefit from methylated forms, while others may not.


Magnesium

Magnesium is one of my go-to minerals for overall support: magnesium is required for hundreds of functions by over 300 enzyme systems in the body. 


Role in Detoxification and Liver Function

Magnesium supports liver detoxification by acting as a cofactor for enzymes involved in phase I and phase II detoxification processes, including those in the cytochrome P450 system, which metabolize drugs and toxins. 


Magnesium also participates in the synthesis of glutathione, the body's master antioxidant, and reduces oxidative stress and promotes healthy bowel movements, essential for toxin excretion.


Magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia) is linked to conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), and fibrosis by worsening oxidative stress, lipid accumulation, and inflammation. 


Adequate dietary intake of magnesium-rich foods (e.g., seeds, nuts, spinach) can prevent age-related hepatic dysfunction, support detoxification, and maintain liver homeostasis.


Recommended Dosage

Forms like magnesium glycinate or citrate are more bioavailable than forms like magnesium oxide. A general recommendation is to aim for 300-400 mg daily, adjusting for individual needs. Always consult a doctor for personalized advice prior to starting any new supplements. 


Greens Powder

Despite our best intentions, most of us don’t get enough veggies daily. Taking a greens powder for extra support is fantastic to support liver health, detoxification and overall cellular health. 


Role in Detoxification

Foods like cilantro, spinach, green tea, chlorella, and cruciferous veggies like kale, broccoli, cabbage, collard greens and others are rich in plant-based compounds, vitamins, and minerals that support liver health and detoxification.


How It Supports Detox

Certain compounds in green vegetables have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and protective properties that protect cells from damage and support detoxification.  


Also, fiber promotes digestive health, reducing toxin recirculation, while antioxidants combat oxidative stress.


Recommended Dosage

The general recommendation is to add one scoop (usually 5-10 grams) to water or a smoothie daily for a quick nutrient boost, but always follow the directions on the label.


Vitamins C and E

Vitamins C and E work together to support cellular health and protect liver cells from damage. 


Role in Detoxification and Liver Function

Vitamin C and vitamin E are potent antioxidants that neutralize free radicals produced during detoxification.


Vitamin C encourages healthy inflammatory response and helps the liver process toxins. Vitamin E supports healthy cell membranes from oxidative damage, promoting cellular resilience during detox.


Recommended Dosage

The general recommendation is 500-1,000 mg of vitamin C and 200-400 IU of vitamin E daily. Look for natural sources or high-quality supplements, and talk with your doctor if you have any questions.


Fish Oil

The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil support overall health, proper metabolism, and promote a healthy inflammatory response. 


Role in Detoxification and Liver Health

Fish oil, rich in omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, reduces inflammation and supports cell membrane health, which stabilize liver cells during detoxification.


Omega-3s enhance liver function by reducing inflammation and liver fat accumulation. Fish oil also improves insulin sensitivity alongside reducing liver fat accumulation, enhancing metabolic pathways which supports overall health.


Recommended Dosage

For many people, the recommended dose is 1,000-2,000 mg of combined EPA and DHA daily; it’s important to speak with your doctor to determine the best dose for you. 


Make sure you choose a high-quality fish oil that has been independently tested for the presence of heavy metals and other toxins.


NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine)

NAC is another one of my favorite supplements for overall wellness and its anti-aging benefits, as it helps support levels of your body’s antioxidant powerhouse, glutathione. NAC also has its own cell-protective benefits.


Role in Detoxification and Liver Function

NAC is a precursor to glutathione, a powerful antioxidant. Glutathione directly supports the liver’s ability to neutralize and eliminate toxins.


By boosting glutathione production, NAC aids in the detoxification of various unwanted chemicals, while also scavenging free radicals, reducing oxidative stress, and protecting liver cells on its own.


Recommended Dosage

A common recommendation is to take 600-1,200 mg daily during detox protocols, ideally in divided doses; NAC can cause digestive upset in some people. Your ideal dosage will be determined by your medical provider.


What About Foods and Detox?

Eating the right food is essential to support your body’s natural detoxification processes. It probably makes sense to support your health by eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, getting enough fiber to support elimination, and hydrating well with plenty of filtered water.


Nutritional support helps the body get rid of toxins by providing nutrients, like certain vitamins, amino acids, and plant-based compounds, that boost detoxification enzymes. One study found that foods and supplements like broccoli, pea protein, milk thistle, and Spanish black radish strengthen antioxidants and improve the body’s natural detox systems.


Another study showed that the following foods can modulate your body’s natural detoxification processes: 


  • Cruciferous Vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts boost detox enzymes.


  • Allium Vegetables: garlic, onions, and leeks support detox and glutathione production.


  • Berries: blueberries, blackberries, and blackcurrants help balance detox pathways with their polyphenols.


  • Citrus Fruits: oranges, lemons, and grapefruits support detox enzymes and provide D-glucaric acid.


  • Green and Black Tea: these teas contain catechins that support detox enzymes.


  • Turmeric: curcumin helps activate detox pathways and promotes healthy inflammation levels.


  • Soy: isoflavones like genistein and daidzein promote phase II detox enzymes.


  • Fish Oil: omega-3s enhance glutathione-related detox processes.


  • Grapes and Resveratrol: found in grapes and wine, resveratrol supports detox and antioxidants.
